Currently, going electric does make the most sense when you use that government incentive to install Level 2 (240 V) charging at home. You cannot plug an EV into a Level 1 (110V) socket and expect to only charge at home. If you want the job done right, and done once, Trust Adrian and Urbanite Electrical Services. I can vouch for his integrity and knowledge to provide a system that will be safe, and reliable.Urbanite installed my charger in Charlottetown 4 months ago. I can plug in every 7-10 days if I wanted to drive between 10%-80%. Given I could charge at home for 17c/ kWh, I plug in every day and set my battery max charge to 50% during the week. When the car is plugged into the house, a schedule automatically preconditions the cabin and battery to be nice and toasty for the kids on chilly mornings. My car will do about 300km round trip in the winters, and over 400km around town in the summer. Most of my daily trips are less than 50km. The small bump on the power bill to completely erase my gas bill has been working out fabulously. Some people will need more range than I do, or road trip more frequently than I do. A regular gas hybrid is the solution for anyone not ready to make the switch. Some people may consider spending some of the incentive on buying an EV with a bigger battery.

EV Charging Installation FAQs

There are three primary levels of EV chargers.

Level 1 chargers use a standard 120V AC outlet and offer slow charging, typically suitable for overnight use.

Level 2 chargers require a 240V AC outlet and charge much faster, making them ideal for home and public use. DC Fast Chargers provide rapid charging through a high-power direct current (DC) and are mostly found in commercial or public settings.

Consider the electric vehicle’s compatibility, desired charging speed, available electrical capacity at your home, the physical space for installation, and whether you want smart features such as scheduling and remote monitoring.

We will also need to determine if your current electrical system can handle the additional demand imposed by the charging equipment.

Yes, permits are typically required for any electrical work, including the installation of an EV charger. This ensures that the installation is performed according to code and is safe.

While it is technically possible for someone with electrical experience to install an EV charger, it is generally recommended to hire a certified electrician. This ensures proper installation and adherence to safety standards and local codes.
