Currently, going electric does make the most sense when you use that government incentive to install Level 2 (240 V) charging at home. You cannot plug an EV into a Level 1 (110V) socket and expect to only charge at home. If you want the job done right, and done once, Trust Adrian and Urbanite Electrical Services. I can vouch for his integrity and knowledge to provide a system that will be safe, and reliable.Urbanite installed my charger in Charlottetown 4 months ago. I can plug in every 7-10 days if I wanted to drive between 10%-80%. Given I could charge at home for 17c/ kWh, I plug in every day and set my battery max charge to 50% during the week. When the car is plugged into the house, a schedule automatically preconditions the cabin and battery to be nice and toasty for the kids on chilly mornings. My car will do about 300km round trip in the winters, and over 400km around town in the summer. Most of my daily trips are less than 50km. The small bump on the power bill to completely erase my gas bill has been working out fabulously. Some people will need more range than I do, or road trip more frequently than I do. A regular gas hybrid is the solution for anyone not ready to make the switch. Some people may consider spending some of the incentive on buying an EV with a bigger battery.

Solar Design and Installation FAQs

When designing a solar power system, several key factors must be considered including:

  • the geographic location
  • the angle of the sun
  • local weather patterns
  • the available space for panels
  • energy needs
  • shading from nearby structures or trees
  • local building codes and regulations

The goal is to maximize energy production while ensuring safety and adherence to all applicable standards.

Roof suitability for solar panels is determined by its structural integrity, orientation, slope, and shading.

A professional assessment can determine if your roof can support the weight of the panels and if it receives enough sunlight.

South-facing roofs with little to no shade and a slope between 15 and 40 degrees are typically ideal.

There are primarily three types of solar panel systems: grid-tied systems which are connected to the public electricity grid, off-grid systems which operate independently of the grid, and hybrid systems which are a combination of grid-tied and battery storage.

Each has its benefits and drawbacks depending on the user’s energy needs and location.

To install solar panels on Prince Edward Island, you will typically need to obtain electrical and building permits.

These permits are in place to ensure that the installation complies with local electrical codes, building codes, and safety standards.

The specific permits required can vary based on the size and type of the system, as well as the location of the installation.

The time frame for installing a solar panel system can vary significantly based on the size and complexity of the project.

Small residential systems might take a few days to install, while larger commercial projects could take several weeks or months from planning to commissioning.

The Urbanite Electrical Services team has installed all.

Net metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity they add to the grid.

If a solar system produces more energy than is used, the excess is sent to the grid, and the owner may receive a credit on their electric bill.

Solar panels can generate power on cloudy or rainy days, but their output will be reduced compared to sunny conditions.

The efficiency of energy production depends on the type and quality of the panels.

Solar panel systems require minimal maintenance, usually involving regular cleaning of the panels and checks to ensure the system’s components are functioning correctly.

Many solar installations include a live feed electronic monitoring platform which could help identify any faults in the system.

Yearly inspections by a professional are recommended to maintain optimal performance.

Solar panels are designed to be incredibly durable. They are subjected to a battery of tests that ensure their endurance, reliability, and production guarantee for 25 to 30 years. However, most panels last well beyond that.

There is a solar pioneer in Alberta (Yes! A solar pioneer in Oil Country), who installed their system around 1996, and this system is still healthy and running today (2024).

While the efficiency of panels may decrease over time, they can continue to produce electricity for decades with proper maintenance.

Yes, there are financial incentives available for solar panel installation in Prince Edward Island for both homeowners and businesses.

To be eligible for these rebates, applicants must ensure that their solar PV system is eligible for net metering from their electric utility and meets all applicable regulations under the Canadian Electrical Code as well as provincial laws. The system must also be supplied and installed by an Efficiency PEI Network of Excellence contractor.

Furthermore, the Energy Efficiency Loan Program for Solar Photovoltaic Equipment (EELP-SERP) provides financing to qualifying PEI residents, which can help cover the upfront costs associated with purchasing and installing solar PV equipment princeedwardisland.ca.

These incentives are designed to make solar power more affordable and accessible for Islanders, thereby encouraging the adoption of renewable energy and supporting energy efficiency upgrades.
